Normal EEG vs Seizure EEG: A Comparative Analysis

The detection of epilepsy is a critical task in the field of neurology, as it can significantly impact patient outcomes and quality of life. With the advancement of deep learning technology, researchers have been exploring its applications in epilepsy detection. One of the primary challenges in this area is feature engineering, which requires extracting relevant features from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to improve detection performance.

Traditional Methods

Conventional methods for epilepsy detection rely on manual feature extraction techniques, which can be time-consuming and prone to errors. These methods typically involve extracting features from EEG signals in the time-domain, frequency-domain, or time-frequency-domain. However, these approaches have limitations, as they may not capture all relevant information from the EEG signal.

Deep Learning-Based Methods

Recent studies have focused on deep learning-based detection methods that can automatically learn features from EEG signals. These approaches have shown promising results, with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) being a popular choice for feature extraction. However, the performance of these methods can vary depending on the input format of the EEG signal.

Hybrid Input Formats

In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based epileptic seizure detection method that incorporates multiple input formats of EEG signals. These include original EEG signals, Fourier transforms of EEG signals, short-time Fourier transforms of EEG signals, and wavelet transforms of EEG signals. We demonstrate that the proposed hybrid method can improve seizure detection performance in few-shot scenarios.

Significance

The accurate detection of epileptic seizures is crucial for preventing serious consequences such as falls, asphyxia, and even death. With the ability to detect seizures early, patients with epilepsy can receive timely treatment and management, improving their quality of life. Our proposed method offers a promising solution for single-channel EEG epileptic detection, which can be implemented using simple and practical equipment.

In this study, we compared traditional methods with deep learning-based methods for epilepsy detection using normal EEG signals versus seizure EEG signals. Our results show that the proposed hybrid method outperforms traditional methods in few-shot scenarios. The significance of accurate seizure detection cannot be overstated, and our approach offers a practical solution for improving patient outcomes.

Future Directions

While this study demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed method, further research is needed to explore its generalizability across different populations and datasets. Additionally, the development of more robust and interpretable deep learning-based methods will be crucial for widespread adoption in clinical practice.
